When Léon Breitling founded his workshop in 1884, he had his company registered in the trade register as "watchmaking, chronograph specialist". Chronographs and technical watches have been a strength of the brand ever since. Breitling, a chronograph specialist since its founding in 1884, played an important role in the development of such instruments. He foreshadowed the wrist chronographs by inventing the first independent button at 2 o'clock in 1915. In 1923, the "start/stop" functions were separated from the zero function, thus allowing the measurement of consecutive times. In 1934, Breitling completed the task of giving the chronograph its modern look by developing its second independent pushbutton. He ushered in a new era by introducing the first automatic chronograph movement in 1969. Today, Breitling is one of the rare watch companies to have its own mechanical chronograph movements developed and manufactured entirely in their own workshops.
